Peaceful Thinking 11 x 14 Oil on Panel
The two turquoise vases are from different potters at Chastain Art Center in Atlanta. One of which is my coworker Roberto Diaz. You can purchase his work at the Holiday Sale at the center that is taking place now. This painting is available at Anne Irwin Fine Art. Some paintings just fall into place and this is one of them. Happy Thanksgiving!

Objects of Desire 16 x 20 Oil on Linen
A few months ago Anne Irwin lent me a few objects so that I could use them in a painting. This is the result. The brush and the bowl that her son made when he was young. It's interesting painting things that people give you to paint. First its not about the objects, but of the light and the dark. The objects just happen to be in the painting. I know I interpreted the objects they way I wanted to, but not sure if this is the result she was expecting. This painting is available at the gallery and will be in the Small Works Show that starts November 22.

Black Vase and Fruit 18 x 18 Oil On Panel
A few weeks ago I purchased a new lighting system to help me take photographs of my paintings indoors. The lighting system is from Victor-Smith and I got it through Amazon. It comes with to lights with stands, 2 umbrellas and 2 strong light bulbs. The price was around $130 so I figured that was a good price for all of that. In fact I will be able to use the light stands when I am painting, but I will change the bulbs. In case you order this set order extra bulbs. One blew out after 20 minutes. So far its going okay. Hopefully with practice I can get a clear picture. Time will tell. The next purchase will probably be Photoshop Elements and maybe a new camera.
Now onto the painting this is a follow- up on the Black Vase with Cantaloupe. I wanted to try and paint the vase again using the same painting technique as I used before along with the fruit. After seeing the Dutch Paintings From The Mauritshuis at the High Museum I just had to paint more grapes. The exhibit is a fantastic traveling show and well worth the time to check it out. There were a few Rembrandt's with the wonderful brushstrokes and chiaroscuro, Girl with a Pearl Earring by Vermeer, and two paintings I remembered being tested on in Art History by Frans Hals. It was a great privilege to see this show. There were still life's, landscapes and genre paintings. I do think though my grapes are better then ones in the show, ( lol, I just had to say that). Thanks to David A. Leffel I really learned how to paint grapes.

Feather Your Nest 10 x 8 Oil on Panel
I have now posted 4 bird's nest in a row. Ugh! I paint more then bird's nests, but there were a few different clients that said they were interested in vertical bird's nests. I guess if these people don't purchase them the right person will eventually buy them. Now on to still lifes.

A Little Bird Told Me 12 x 9 Oil on Panel
I have painted more birds nests because a few clients were interested in vertical paintings. This season I have been looking through the bushes and have found a few new nests along with nests that neighbors have given my mother. Some even had an egg or two. The eggs were older if you were wondering. Usually the bird throws them out if there is something wrong with them, but for some reason the ones I have were left in them.

Black Vase With Cantaloupe 12 x 16 on Panel
I just took a new photo of this painting.
I painted this painting back in May and took photos. I wasn't quite happy with the photos so I finally decided just to post the painting. Finally, I decided to buy some lighting to try and take my photos indoors. Hopefully this will help get a better quality. Sometimes the whiter vases get washed out and on dark paintings its hard to get just the right light. As far as this painting is concerned I felt like I had a breakthrough on technique and atmosphere. After watching The Artists Guild videos over and over I really tried to paint my backgrounds in the technique I saw and I liked it better. Funny David taught me how to paint the backgrounds I have been doing for years, but on the videos he does them differently. I saw up close on the video how he painted the silver dollars and am happy with the way mine turned out with the brushstroke and the way the background comes through.
At this point I have around 5 more paintings to post and will try to post them in a timely fashion.

Nightfall In The Studio 30 x 24 Oil on Linen
I wasn't quite sure what to name this painting, but after looking at it I decided it reminded me of what my painting area looks like at night. My objects that I paint seem to be growing and with vases, birds nests and brushes everywhere. I try to stay organized, but being an artist I seem to collect all kinds of things because you just never know what you are going to need for your painting. This time I took a picture of the whole painting and then a detailed picture. Now to frame it. It will be at the gallery this week.

Lodging 12 x 12 Oil on Panel
I have been stalking a bird's nest at my mothers house. The nest got disturbed and the next thing my mother found was 3 Robin's eggs on the ground. They were broken, but I have them. I looked into the nest and there was a Robin's egg, but also a speckled egg. I told my mother to look in there and we couldn't figure out what happened. I guess the Robin abandoned the nest and then squatters moved on in. The next day I looked again and the Robin's egg had been kicked out and on the ground. The speckled egg was there, but it was cold with no bird around. Well I took both of them. At least the nest is still there and I think either the squatters or the Robin will show up again. I am hoping so. Lucky for the birds I can't go over in the area because a rabbit has new bunnies in the pine straw in that area and I sure don't want to disturb that!

Antique Calligraphy Brush 20 x 16 Oil on Panel
Last fall someone gave me this wonderful Chinese calligraphy brush. I kept it on a table just waiting to figure out what kind of setup to paint with it as the main object. It all came together when I got the pottery made for me. I incorporated the way I paint my nests with the way I painted the brush hairs. It worked out and now I plan on doing another painting with brushes. One of these days I will paint the marsh landscape that I took a photo of this last summer. With that painting I plan to paint the grass with the same technique as the brush and nest so that it incorporates my style of painting.
On to the next brush painting that I have setup. Hopefully I will get it started this weekend.

Quietude 24 x 20 Oil on Panel
Here is another painting that is bigger then my usual paintings. Once again I took this picture at the gallery because of the cloudy weather. I recently purchased this vessel in High Point, NC while at the Furniture Market. There is a store there that has odds and ends and I finally had time to go check out what they had.
I have now added a bar on the bottom of each post for Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter. I really enjoy Pinterest and have many boards. One of my favorites is the food board, but I haven't made any of the recipes. At this point I think I have around 168 so you would think I would have tried one of them. One of these days. I also added a translation bar. After seeing all of the countries that have viewed my blog I decided to add this. Its on the bottom right. This painting is available at the Anne Irwin Fine Art.

The Vessel 36 x 24 Oil on Canvas
I know this size is going to shock the majority of you. It is the largest painting I have done since college. I really enjoyed painting this painting. The Vessel was made by a local potter at the Chastain Art Center. I took the picture of the painting last night on the wall. It has been cloudy and rainy for more then a week and I tried to take pictures outside, inside with all kinds of lights, but I just couldn't get a great shot. This is the best photo from the show.
Last night was the opening of the Best In Show at Anne Irwin Fine Art This painting along with another large painting is hanging in the show. I thought the show really looked good last night so if you have a chance you should go by and take a look. The show will be up until Feb. 5th. More paintings of this size to come!
