To get back into painting after the holidays I once again decided to paint some bird's nests. Its a nice way of easing back into the routine. I have a few more to post in the next few days. This birds nest is an older one that I found in the yard a few years ago. The twigs are made out of straw and its a little rougher then some of the other birds nests that I have found in the yard. I don't know what kind of bird built this, but it has great texture.

Okay this is the last of the paintings for me to post for the Swan House Show that starts on the 17th. Also, I will have one more post on Saturday and that will be for the show announcement. Then off to S.C. for a business trip for a few days. I will be on my next round of posts after that. Like I said the next two months I will have a lot of paintings to post. This is a smaller version of my wonderful Antique Sake or Soy Sauce Vessel. I just love this object. I know when you are painting you are painting light/dark not the objects etc.., but I do love this vessel. There are so many wonderful colors that pop out when painting it along with reflections.

I just had to paint a few more pieces of cantaloupe while they are in season. I am not eating them because I am allergic to them. The vessel is the antique Chinese soy sauce container I bought this year that I just love. It has so many nice colors in it with the browns, blacks and oranges.

I decided it was time to paint a slice of cantaloupe again and this time I added the antique bottle that I bought on EBay last year. I think for my next painting I will paint cantaloupe again. It is really fun to paint with all of the oranges and the variety of colors you find in each slice. Thanks to all of the people that showed up for the opening the other night. I really enjoy seeing and talking with my friends at these shows. The paintings of all of the artists were wonderful! So many styles and colors.

I started and stopped this painting a few times in the last few weeks. The pitcher was missing its handle so I glued it back on and painted the handle into the painting. These grapes had a different name to them and were very colorful compared to just the red grapes or black grapes.

It's September now and its time to bring out that wonderful gold vase of mine that I love to paint. Where did this hot summer go? Of course where I live we will have hot weather until at least October. I still didn't have enough beach time this summer. I guess it was better then the last 2 years since I didn't even make it to the beach. Anyway this painting has that autumn feel with the golds, olives, and reds.

What can I say another bird's nest. This summer my mother found the robin's egg in this painting next to the water bowl she puts out for the birds. I guess the robin accidentally gave birth while getting water. The egg shape was a little off so maybe there was a problem. Anyway it is now being used when I paint the birds nests. I hope the majority of homes survive during this hurricane!

I really enjoy painting this Antique Chinese Soy Sauce Vessel. As posted a few months ago I purchased this after years of looking for one. It was expensive, but well worth it. The blue and white jar is also an antique from a relative. It is a perfect size for many of my paintings. These roses came from the backyard. At the beginning of the season they were more pink and now they are more yellow, but every time they bloom they are a different color off of the same rose bush.

This morning reading a post from a fellow Atlanta artist on Facebook, I wanted to alert my friends. She went to a restaurant this weekend to find that an image of her painting had been stolen and printed I assume on canvas and was hanging in the restaurant. Apparently this has happened to another Atlanta artist. If I find out more information I will post it. What kind of person would do this?

I wanted this painting to have a feeling of tranquility and mystery so I decided to go with the grey background. The vase with the design on it is actually wooden. My mother found it at an antique store in Dothan, Alabama on the way to our vacation in Cape San Blas, Fl. It was the perfect find. I am ready for another vacation.

I found this nest in the dogwood tree a few months ago, but there was never a bird in it. I decided to take it down and use it for a painting. I liked how the bird had gotten the day lilly leaves from the front island for the nest on the side of the house. A few weeks later a new nest was in the exact spot and I felt so bad about taking the first one. The bird once again didn't have any babies or sit in the nest. This time I will wait until fall to take it out then again I may just leave it there.

Many times in life I have felt like I was flying solo. This happens to be one of those times. Thank God for my good friends and their support! Today I was reading the September issue of American Artist Magazine, and there was an article about Dan McCaw. In it he states, "that he has been particularly moved by the idea that we are all ultimately alone, even when surrounded by familiar people and places." I totally agree.

I just got back from the beach a week ago and I am ready for another beach trip. I miss my family's summer home on the Chesapeake Bay. It wasn't much, but it was great being on the water. This summer we went to Cape San Blas, Florida. If you don't want any communication with the outside world this is the place to go.

A few months ago after painting, "First Blooms" I decided to do a small study on a canvas panel. I really like how this study turned out and learned more about painting roses doing this study. I felt like the painting needed something more so I added the blue jar. In the end I decided to keep this painting as a reference for future roses.

In this painting I really wanted a certain serene masculine feeling. Therefore I decided to go with a solid dark background to give it that feeling. It is like the objects are sitting on the counter in the middle of the night.

On another note I read the most interesting article today by Robert Genn. It is from his website, Painters Keys. He said that every year around 900,000 people in the U.S. buy brushes and paints for the first time. Then about 800,000 decide painting is not their thing. That means at any given time 3% of the population is trying to paint.

Can you say more of Atlanta then Georgia Peaches? Actually I think South Carolina produces more peaches these days. I decided I would paint peaches and hydrangeas making the hydrangeas the common theme for both paintings in case someone wanted to purchase both. I like the light and darks in this painting.

Anne Irwin Fine Art is having a show that opens on June 17th. The theme is called the "Tale of Two Cities." It is Paris and Atlanta. For the show I decided to one with a France theme and one with an Atlanta theme. This one of course is the France theme. I found the brie box at an estate sale that my friend Melinda was helping with in Atlanta. At the time I had not a clue of what I was going to paint since I have never visited France. I did take 3 years of French in high school, but I barely remember how to say anything in French. Anyway, I decided to incorporate the box along with fresh hydrangeas from my mother's front yard. I think it has a French feel to it. I know that there is a slight glare on this painting, but I have to get it to the gallery by Monday and I don't think we will have clouds or rain anytime soon. Finally I was able to take photos of my latest paintings. During my recovery period I wasn't allowed to carry anything that weighed 10 pounds and so therefore I just took it easy. I take my pictures of my paintings outside and have to carry my equipment with me.

These roses are the first roses that bloomed in April. They were so large and very pointy. Now there are new blooms and they are smaller and more delicate. They all looked very much alike so I kept them that way in the painting. I am still working on my flowers since my workshop with Robert Johnson. They are a challenge because they are so perfect and trying to duplicate that is not easy.

My aunt had given this ginger jar to my grandmother years ago and then sent it to me recently. After taking Robert Johnson's workshop I read his book again and found that he had the same ginger jar in his paintings. The ginger jar must have been popular in Virginia because that is where Robert and my aunt live. A few weeks ago I was looking at one of the art magazines and had seen that Elizabeth Robbins had one and also another artist. Boy, is that thing popular. I can believe it because its fantastic to paint. It has such an old look about it. My aunt told me that originally when she bought the ginger jar it had candy in it. You would never have guessed that the way everyone paints it. Thank you Aunt Judy for the ginger jar. I will be painting it again.

There are all kinds of neighbors. When you are a child your neighborhood friends in many cases become lifetime friends. As you get older it seems as though neighbors come and go and you lose touch with them. I am lucky in that I have many childhood friends that were all my neighbors. They were as important to me then as they are now. One of my childhood friends brought me dinner over this weekend after my surgery. Gail Clarke's website is http://www.deliciousdishes.net/ . Gail does catering for parties, weddings, tennis teams and meals for families. She is one of my first childhood neighbors. Even though we lost touch for years we ran into each other somewhere and our friendship picked back up where we had left it. I am so fortunate to have wonderful friends from childhood, school and friends I have met along the way. Thank you for all of your support and friendship.

Finally its Spring! I know everyone has to be ready for spring after that harsh winter throughout the country. In honor of spring and the bird's making new nests I painted a nest painting. I guess the Robin's will have to build another nest since I took this last year from a tree.

I finally found this Chinese antique soy sauce jug that David A. Leffel used in many of his paintings in one of his recent books. During a workshop a few years ago someone asked what the jug was and he told us. The jug was brought over by the Chinese when the Chinese men built our railroads. They used it for soy sauce originally, but I had the feeling that it might have also been used for alcohol from what David learned. It took me years to find this jug and I just happened to look one night and found one that had been passed on at a auction in South Carolina. I called the auction house and begged the owner to sell it to me. Finally it arrived and it is so much fun to paint. Now I understand why David used the jug in so many of his paintings. It is a great size, shape and you can put flowers in it. I really like how this painting turned out. I think you will see this antique soy sauce jug in many more paintings in the future.

This set up came from the workshop last month. I didn't have time to complete the painting so I came home and finished it. When I got it outside I wasn't happy with the background so I gave it another coat or two. The whole painting has a certain glow about it. I really like how the fabric came out at the end. Being a textile designer and designing fabric and coloring it I avoid it when I am doing my oil paintings. I guess I get caught up in the exact repeat and the exact amount of colors that is really in the design. After taking the workshop I learned how to simplify it better and to make it appear like it is more intricate then it actually is in the painting. In the future I plan on using fabric in my paintings.

Robert A. Johnson Workshop

Last month I took a wonderful workshop with Robert A. Johnson at the Quinlan Visual Art Center in Gainesville, Georgia. I was so lucky to get in the class because the size was limited. He is such a fantastic teacher. He had studied under a few teachers I had taken from so I thought that would be helpful to me. I had read his book a few years ago and had learned many ideas along with watching one of his videos recently. I mainly decided to take from him because of the way he paints his flowers. Over the years I really haven't painted them because they are intimating and still are to this day. I did learn about painting them, but still need to practice on a variety of them. I would recommend Robert as a great teacher and a wonderful learning experience. He spent time with each student everyday, which doesn't always happen in workshops. That time was so beneficial to me.

The top painting is Robert's demo. The 2nd picture is the set up itself. The 3rd paintings is mine. I decided not to add in the blue design on the vase because everyone who was painting from the demo was doing that. Robert painted the Red Rose on my painting. I was struggling and he came over to help me with it. I let him paint the rose so that I could see up close his technique. The other objects in the painting are mine. This painting is not for sale because I can always look at it to see how he painted that red rose. I do have more paintings to post and will do so in a few days. There you will see where I have started painting flowers.

In some workshops each artist sets up his own still life while in other workshops there are a few set ups and many paint from them. That was the case in this workshop. I prefer to paint on my own set up because then you can get close to it and paint from it. When you have a set up where many are painting from the same one you can't get as close and that is not how I usually paint so I struggle just to see what I am doing. Therefore some of the details get lost when you can't get as close as you would like. In the very top picture you can see where the set up was located and where his easel was located. Very close and that what I do when I paint from home.

This is the 2nd time that I have painted this wonderful black whiskey bottle that I purchased on EBay. Its just a fantastic size and the color is really nice. The little white jar is from my aunt. It actually has a blue and white design, but I left it off this time because I really wanted to show the color of the jar. This morning I varnished my current paintings. Once the varnish goes on all of the painting just seems to have a glow. This was taken before the varnish.

I needed a present to give for Christmas and bought the aqua jar from my coworker Roberto. He had made it in his pottery class and I loved the shape, size and color. Needless to say I kept the piece of pottery for myself to paint. I just love those aqua colors and the touch of orange/rust from the clay.

I found painting a red vase a little more difficult then I expected. I guess because there were many shades of red and I didn't wanted it as bright as it was so I toned it down. I have pears in many of my paintings currently because I bought a big container at Sam's and just keep using them. I think I am getting down to the end. Usually by the time I finish the painting they are mushy. Next weekend I will varnish this painting and it will be at the Spotlight On Art Show at the Trinity School. I will post the information in a week or so. After viewing this picture I adjusted the neck and top part of the red vase to make it more even. I will post a new picture if I have time next Saturday.

This painting was hard to name for some reason. Sometimes when I name paintings its so easy its like the painting speak to me and sometimes its a struggle. The thing is this painting is one of my favorites. I like the dark against the oranges and just the overall old masters look about it. I will take the 2 paintings that I have posted today to Anne Irwin Fine Art for the Small Works Show that goes thru December 31st.

After painting the dark whiskey bottle a few weeks ago I decided I would tackle this dark vase that I purchased a few years ago at Parson's. I love how the reflections of the lemons turned out and the look of the black vase. When I took my first workshop with David Leffel his setup had a black teapot. I painted from that still life and didn't know what I was doing with any of it. He came over and painted on the teapot bringing out different colors and then worked on some pears in the setup. After he finished with those I moved onto things he didn't touch so that I could always have what he worked on as a reference to me. It may be the closest thing to me owning one of his paintings.

The following paintings sold the other night at the opening of the Small Works Show at Anne Irwin Fine Art. The show runs thru December 31st and I still have paintings available and will replenish them thru the month. It was nice meeting everyone the other night and I was able to meet two of the people that purchased my paintings. Many times during shows I never get to meet the people who purchase my paintings so I am always excited when I get the chance to meet the buyers. Thank you Warren and Thank you Kathy. I love painting this gold vase. I just love how it glows. I don't know why some of the other vases don't glow as much, but am trying to figure it out. These berries I think came from a Bradford Pear Tree. I took the clippers with me while walking around the block and got them from a neighbors yard. :) It was between to houses in the front next to the electrical box and it was overgrown so I don't think anyone would care. The sugar pears are so much fun to paint. I love the colors.

I recently found this old whiskey bottle on Ebay and it was just what I was looking for to paint. I plan on painting it again in the future and love the look of it. This is the first time I have painted the apples this season. I bought new ones, but still have the ones in the fridge from last year, which are fine. The white vase didn't photograph as well as I would like for it to. In fact this painting was really hard to photograph and I am not sure quite why.

I decided to paint a cantaloupe again. They are so much fun to paint. They are one of my favorite things to paint. Also, I like putting the grapes coming out of vases because you can see the beautiful colors in the light. My Aunt Judy made the green piece of pottery. I have used this piece in a few paintings and really like the colors in the pottery.

Italian Bottle With Turquoise Vase 16 x 20 on Panel

I have been wanting to paint this antique wine bottle that I purchased at Scott's Antique Market years ago. It has been sitting in the corner of the art room for a few years. Now I see these bottles in the Pottery Barn catalog and other places. They say the bottles are from Hungary in the catalog, and I think I was told mine was from Romania. Since I wasn't sure I just decided to say it was an Italian Bottle. Mine is a little worn with some of the wicker coming off, and I love the character of the bottle. In the picture since I use a blue filter on my camera the blue eggs and turquoise vase didn't show up with the richness in the actual painting. You can see this painting at The Anne Irwin Fine Art Small Works show starting this Friday, November 19th through December 31st. I will post about the show tomorrow.

I love painting these nests. I know have around 6 or 7 nests that I have collected over the past year. I am still searching for them in the yard, but the last one I found fell apart. I think it was a mocking birds because I saw him in that area during the summer and he didn't like that my car was parked near that bush. Oh well :)

I will be participating in the Holiday Show at Anne Irwin Fine Art. This is a small works show. I think all of my current paintings qualify for that since I haven't really painted too many larger then a 16 x 20. I plan on it in the near future.

The nest paintings make a nice gift and I know at the last show the woman who bought one was buying if for a gift.

Robin's Nest 9 x 12 on Panel

So a Robin decided to build a nest in the Crepe Myrtle in the backyard during the spring. We waited and waited for the baby birds, but none appeared. The mother bird sat on the nest for the longest time. Finally she left and we thought she had moved on. Well I decided it was time for me to get the nest out of the Crepe Myrtle. I got my ladder and saw that the nest was built around the branches. I was able to maneuver the nest out. While doing that an egg went flying out and hit the ground and broke. It smelled bad. So a few months go by and the next thing we know the robin is back looking for her nest and its not there. I felt so bad. I didn't know they came back to the same nest and then got pregnant again during the same season. I guess she was busy. She scrambled to build another nest in the exact same spot. I am happy to report that she had a baby or two this time. She has left now for the season and I did get the nest. This time it was full of nasty ants to I had to spray it and its drying in out in the garage.

For all of the nests that I have found so far the Robin's nest is the heaviest. They pack it in with mud on the bottom and then whatever they can find. This one had some heavy duty rope in it and I painted part of it where I saw it.

Dried Leaves with Gold Vase 12 x 12 on Panel

What can I say, but I love painting this gold vase. I am addicted to the vase because of the way the color always turns out. The dried leaves are some form of eucalyptus and I bought them at Whole Foods a few years ago.

Chinese Lantern Plant with Nest 8 x 10 on Panel

I have been growing Chinese Lantern Plants all summer long and just cut them to dry. These I found at Whole Foods last year and this is my 2nd attempt to paint them. Last summer I grew them and they didn't do anything so when they came back this summer I put them in the ground. I didn't realize that they were like kudzu. They were popping up all over the backyard and I think I saw one next to the side walk, which is not close to where I planted them. I may have created a monster. As far as the nest my sister-in-law Tracy found this in her yard and gave it to me. Yes, there is orange plastic string around the edge. We think it came from one of those pine straw bales with the orange wrapping. It is just the sweetest nest and I plan on painting it again. I am including a picture of the nest just to show proof that this is how it looked. I have found painting nests that birds are so creative in making their homes and the work they put into them is amazing.

O'Henry Peaches and Blueberries 8 x 10 on Panel

This is my 2nd attempt at Peaches and I really like painting them. My boss picked these up in Gaffney, South Carolina on the way back from a business trip. These are O'Henry peaches and they are the last of the season. They are good. I decided to add blueberries since I haven't painted them before. I was told I like to paint grapes so that was another reason for the blueberries. Yes, I love painting grapes :)

I got this new canister at Home Goods a few weeks ago to paint. I love that spa color and thought it would be nice to do a vertical layout. As you know I love to paint grapes so I decided to have them cascading out of the canister and then in other ares of the painting.

After seeing a few paintings with melon in them lately, I decided I would paint a slice again. I had not painted one in years and they are a lot of fun to paint. The grapes were the same grapes I used in the Peaches painting. I figured I had them I might as well use them.

Gold Vase 11 x 14 on Panel

I decided it was time to bring out my gold vase to paint again. I am working on paintings for a show and the gold vase always turns out well when I paint it.

In the past few weeks I have had to buy a new computer with Windows 7, plus a new printer, Office 2007 and one new camera for freelance jobs that I do. Along with that I had to spend time with Fuji and with HP to find out that the camera I use to take photos of my work was obsolete even though it is only 3 years old. Fuji said it wouldn't have any updates for this camera. HP was able to show me how I could use my camera, which was a relief. It has been overwhelming to work with all of this new equipment at once and that is one main reason I haven't posted anything in a few weeks. Hopefully now I will have more time to paint since I am getting used to all of this equipment and finally have everything working.

I decided to repost this painting because after posting it I wanted to change the white bowl. I bought these peaches at the local farmer's market a few weeks ago. I saw that the peaches had leaves on them so I asked the guy if I could have the ones with leaves. I am sure he wondered why, but since he didn't ask I didn't tell him it was for me to put in the painting. Luckily I finished the painting and the peaches were still good.

Radishes 8 x 8 SOLD

This painting was a commission piece. A group of friends from around the country who were trying to see who could grow the best radishes. The woman in charge, Marjorie was very creative and sent out all kinds of awards to her friends. Becky, was one of the women who was growing the radishes along with her grandchildren. Becky wanted to give this painting to Marjorie for being so thoughtful to all of the growers. Thank you Becky for this wonderful opportunity.

The radishes were so much fun to paint. I got out all of my tubes of different reds and went to work. Now if I only liked to eat them. I have 2 bags in the refrigerator. Maybe I can try them again.

Fallen 12 x 9 on Panel

I have been waiting for this birds nest for weeks. The cardinals built a nest in the gardenia bush and it was in the perfect spot for me to get. I love the oval shape they made their nest. They were so smart. They used parts of the river birch bark from out front and then they had a piece of heavy duty plastic in there and then believe it or not a few pieces of tape. This nest is just so cool. I thought about putting the piece of plastic in it and I tried several times, but it just didn't look right and it took over the painting so I left it out. I put in the tape, but by the time I finished the painting it was mostly covered up. You can see a few pieces of white where it was highlighted a little. I know the cardinals had a baby, but my mother found 2 eggs in the grass and we figured it came from the nest. I don't know what happened, but I have to say I am glad we have them so I can put them in paintings. As far as the title the way the nest is it has to lean up against something and it looks like its falling. Also, finding the eggs on the ground that fell out of the nest was another reason for the title.
